Weldon’s 1632 Gold OD Punch Grinder

Posted on: January 15th, 2016 by Rick Holberg

1048BlogPicA major Ohio based sheet-metal punch manufacturer has added another Weldon model 1632 GOLD to their equipment list. This newest machine features a high-speed control system, custom software, and an X-axis linear motor, that together resulted in productivity increases of better that 80%. Notable was that the higher productivity was accomplished at a quality level exceeding current standards. In this application, punches are ground “from solid” using vitrified CBN abrasives. This eliminates the normal pre-milling to remove the bulk of the stock, eliminates the need to radially locate from a preshape to establish C-axis position, reduces work-in-progress inventory, and shortens the lead time for manufacturing.

System Features
• Fanuc X-axis linear motor
• Weldon programmable gear drive workhead
• Heidenhain Xaxis glass scale
• GII electric rotary dresser
• Dittel acoustic emissions sensor
• Encyclon cyclonic coolant filtration system
• Turmoil chiller for coolant and linear motor
• Absolent mist collector
• Fanuc 310i CNC control

Weldon Solutions offers a full line of CNC OD, ID, and combination grinders. As a Fanuc Robotics integrator Weldon can also address your machine tending, material removal, material handling, and packaging/palletizing needs.

A post-process gage communicates with the Fanuc CNC for size compensation on a trend basis. The fully automated cycle under gage control can produce roughly 67 parts per hour.

System Features
• Fanuc tending robot
• Telesis laser engraver
• Cognex camera
• ATI deburr unit
• SBS automatic wheel balancer
• Dittel acoustic sensor system
• Jenoptik post-process gage

Weldon’s “Automate – Innovate – Educate” Open House a big success!

Posted on: August 11th, 2015 by Rick Holberg

Weldon Solutions hosted an Open House at their CNC Grinder manufacturing facility on Thursday, July 23, 2015. The theme for this year’s event was “Automate – Innovate – Educate”.

This year’s Open House garnered over 200 attendees from local, regional and national businesses. More than 50 local engineers attended a series of continuing education seminars hosted throughout the day.

The Open House was held throughout the facility with the shop floor hosting much of the display space, including 7 CNC Cylindrical Grinders demonstrating OD and ID grinding, 12 Robots with payloads ranging from 1 to 350 pounds demonstrating a broad range of robotic and machine vision capabilities and 4 allied component suppliers with table-top displays. There was also a 3-D Printer creating parts through additive manufacturing.

Additionally, York area students from the TechFire 225 team demonstrated their award winning robot from the F.I.R.S.T. (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics League.  Tech Fire is a collaboration of York County students.

Weldon talks Depalletizing in 3D in recent RIA article

Posted on: April 28th, 2014 by Rick Holberg

A newly developed and installed Weldon Solutions automation project was featured in a recent Robotics Industries Association publication. In the article, Charlie Gales, Weldon’s Automation Sales Manager, talks about  cable management as a critical step in a depalletizing and machine tending application for a boring mill system. The automation system featured a Fanuc robot using an overhead 3D area sensor to first locate and pick the parts from the pallet. Then a separate 2D vision system is used to precisely determine the part’s orientation in the gripper before loading it into the boring mill.

Weldon Wins Accolades at FANUC Conference

Posted on: April 1st, 2014 by ws_admin

2013 was a banner year in the Weldon/FANUC relationship. Weldon received numerous accolades at the recent FANUC Robotics North America annual conference in Orlando, FL. Weldon was mentioned numerous times during FANUC’s opening Marketing presentation. References included our Open House, Robotic brochure publication and a Google AdWords co-op program.

Weldon Solutions was awarded with one of the “Excellence in Intelligent Robotics” Awards.  This was given to System Integrators that utilized iRVision in at least 20% of the Robots that they installed in 2013.  The reason that they recognize companies with this award is that FANUC understands how difficult it is to successfully complete projects that incorporate Machine Vision.  Look for the trophy to be displayed in the Weldon Solutions Receptionist Area soon!

Bill Catalano, National Sales Manager for FANUC CNC, spoke since the CNC segment of FANUC recently merged with the Robotics segment. Bill mentioned Weldon Solutions twice as a company that uses both FANUC  CNC Controls and Robots.  He was encouraging System Integrators to consider the use of FANUC controls for machines that they may be currently controlling with a PLC or PC.

Ed Roney, leader of FANUC’s iRVision product line, used the Weldon project video that recently debuted on FANUC’s YouTube Channel in an Intelligent Robot presentation. The 3-D Area Scanner that Weldon integrated for depalletizing cast housings for a Pennsylvania manufacturer, is one of only a handful of projects where this technology has been installed since its release a year ago. All of the others are at automotive facilities. FANUC was very appreciative of the job that Weldon did on this project and immediately requested video footage. Watch the video here:
